HSF at Columbia
The HSF-Scholar Chapter at Columbia University was initiated in the 2008 academic year through the initiative of 5 board members. Five years later, our chapter has gained tremendous strength and recognition on campus with 15 active board members on the executive board. The chapter has grown diversely in professional development and the types of academic events it offers to college students on campus. In the past, we have hosted events such as the Graduate-School Series Workshops, to prepare Latino students to apply for higher education, and Orientation for Spanish-Speaking Families, to provide families with a greater understanding of their children's education experience. Additionally, the chapter continues to strive for community involvement and academic enhancement through our tutoring and mentoring programs which are geared towards under-resourced High School students.
Our chapter stands out among other organizations on campus as it aims to enhance leadership and pre-professional opportunities based on the needs of the broader Latino community. As a result, we have acquired the reputation of being the most impartial-serving Latino organization on campus. Moreover, the chapter creates a closely- knit family environment where any Latino and non-Latino student can participate and benefit indefinitely from the goals and mission of HSF. In the spring of 2013, the Scholar Chapter at Columbia won the Scholar Chapter of the Year Award from the HSF National Chapter. It was an exciting recognition for us as it reminded us that successful programming could only really come through building a strong functional team. This is just one of the many reasons why someone should join our chapter!
